Maryland State Colonization Society Emigrant to Liberia from Caroline County, 1832

Biography:

A free born resident of Caroline County, Willoughby and his wife Sarah had six daughters: Mary, Maria, Amy, Catharine, Eleanor, and Hester.1 In 1832, the family was enumerated on the Caroline County Free Negro Census, where they indicated a desire to emigrate to Liberia.2 Later that year, on December 9, they departed from Baltimore, sailing to Monrovia, Liberia on the ship Lafayette. They arrived on February 7, 1883 but moved to Cape Palmas, Liberia the following year. There, Willoughby was elected sheriff on March 2, 1835. Shortly afterwards, he died suddenly in April 1835.3
