Biography:

Nelly Bruce was an enslaved woman who belonged to James and Mary Lyles Coombs of Prince George's County, Maryland. Nelly was married to James "Jim" Bruce an enslaved man who belonged to Anthony Addison who was also a resident of Prince George's County. Nelly and Jim had two children James and Betty who were also the property of James and Mary L. Coombs, because enslaved children followed the status of their mother. 

In 1814, Nelly Bruce along with her husband Jim and two children escaped to British ships that were lying in the Potomac River.
