Nace Leach

Biography:

Nace Leach was an enslaved man who was owned by William Whittington of Calvert County, Maryland. He was the father of twin sons, George and Samuel Leach, who were also enslaved by Whittington. In 1814, Nace Leach escaped from William Whittington along with another enslaved man William Hockton. Nace also carried his two sons George and Samuel Leach with him. At the time of his escape Nace leach was 29 years of age and valued at $500. 

Nace settled in the town of Preston in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The climate in Nova Scotia was different than the Chesapeake region he was used to. In the fall of 1815, Leech was recorded with his wife Letty and their two sons George and Samuel.  In 1824, Nace Leach joined William Dear, John Collins and Henry Broad in petitioning the President of Nova Scotia asking to be allowed to establish a settlement in the "back woods of Musquodoboit.
