Biography:
Rawleigh Coursey was a slave in St. Mary's County who belonged to William C. Somerville. Coursey
escaped from Somerville along with five other slaves
belonging to his owner. Three of the other slaves, Henny, Jenny, and
James also carried the surname Coursey like James, which indicates
that they were likely related to each other. In addition to the
Coursey's the other slaves who escaped with Rawleigh were Ellick
Sampson and Ben Fuller.
Rawleigh Coursey settled in Nova Scotia and purchased land with James Coursey.
