James Coursey
MSA SC 5496-51038
War of 1812 Refugee, St. Mary's County, Maryland

Biography:

James Coursey was a slave in St. Mary's County who belonged to William C. Somerville. He was commonly called Jim by Somerville. Coursey escaped from Somerville along with five other slaves belonging to his owner. Three of the other slaves, Henny, Jenny, and Rawleigh all carried the surname Coursey like James, which indicates that they were likely related to each other. In addition to the Coursey's the other slaves who escaped with Rawleigh were Ellick Sampson and Ben Fuller.

James Coursey settled in Nova Scotia and purchased land with Rawleigh Coursey.
