Primus Mitchell

Biography:

Primus Mitchell was an enslaved man who was owned by John T. Stoddert of Charles County, Maryland. His wife Nancy Somerville was owned by Benjamin T. Fendall. Primus Mitchell and Nancy were the parents of four sons Townshend, Brookes, Loyd, and Carter. All of the children were also owned by Benjamin T. Fendall. 

During the War of 1812, Primus Mitchell escaped from his owner John T. Stoddert of Charles County. Mitchell escaped with his wife Nancy Somerville and their four son's Brookes, Carter, Townshend and Loyd. Nancy and the children were owned by Benjamin T. Fendall who also lived in Charles County. The family settled in Preston, Nova Scotia.
