Biography:

Harry alias Henry Gantt was an enslaved man who was owned by Rev. Edward Gantt of Calvert County, Maryland. At. the death of his owner Rev. Edward Gantt, Harry became the property of his son Edward Gantt, Jr. Harry’s new owner was born mentally challenged and had to be cared for by various family members. Dr. Thomas C. Gantt, brother of Edward Gantt, Jr, petitioned the Chancery Court for a writ de Lunetico which would authorize him to act as trustee. The court appointed Dr. Gantt as the trustee of his brother, giving him full responsibility over his estate, which included his enslaved property.

In the summer of 1814, Harry escaped from the property of Dr. Thomas C. Gantt.
