Biography:

Basil was an enslaved man who was owned by Rev. Edward Gantt of Calvert County, Maryland. Basil’s owner Edward Gantt was required to have a trustee, Dr. Thomas C. Gantt due to his being labeled an idiot. Basil was hired out by Dr. Gantt to Alexander Dawkins.

In the summer of 1814, Basil fled from the property of Dr. Thomas C. Gantt to the British frigate, Loire.
