MSA SC 5496-50888
War of 1812 Refugee, Prince George's County, Maryland

Biography:

Samuel "Sam" Beanes was the enslaved property of Ursula Bowie and her son Charles Bowie of Prince George's County. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Samuel Beanes escaped from Charles and Ursula Bowie. Sam fled with his uncle Toby Forester and another enslaved man named Osbourne Wheeler. According to a letter written by Toby Forester, he and Sam Beanes parted ways in Bermuda. At the time that they parted ways, Forester said that Sam was in good health and set sail for Tiladant.

After the war Ursula and Charles Bowie submitted a claim to the Department of State for the loss of their three enslaved men to the British. William M. Bowie, the son of Ursula and brother of Charles had his slave Ned Wheeler give a deposition stating that he knew the escaped slaves. The Bowie's were awarded $280 for the loss of Samuel Beanes.
