Juliet Rawlings (b. circa ? - d. circa ?)
MSA SC 5496-050780
War of 1812 Claimant, Calvert County, Maryland

Biography:

The daughter of William Rawlings, Juliet Rawlings lived with her grandmother Susannah Rawlings in Calvert County, Maryland. She had at least one sister, Susan, and a brother, Isaac Rawlings Jr. of Tennessee1 In July 1814, three of Juliet's slaves, Mary Mitchel and her daughters Harriet and Sidney, escaped to the British.2 Three others escaped from Juliet's grandmother: Minty Caden, Alexander Covington, and Peter Newlings.

Susannah Rawlings likely died around 1826, so by 1828 Juliet was living with her sister Susan.3 On December 19, 1823, the Maryland Assembly passed an act authorizing "Isaac Rawlings, of Tennessee... to remove into this state, at any time during eighteen months from the passage of this act, ten negro slaves, now the property of himself and his two sisters, Susan and Juliet Rawlings." The act also prevented the sisters from selling any of the slaves for the next three years.4

Juliet later moved to Shelby County, Tennessee, dying in Memphis in 1855. She left a will  naming various relatives, including her brother Isaac and "my cousins" Joseph J. Rawlings and Dr. Thomas J. Rawlings, who lived in Shelby County until moving to Ohio around the time of Juliet's death. The will also mentioned a slave, James Somerville, whom she had hired out to her cousin John James Rawlings in Calvert County. She also bequeathed John James her portion of Rawlings Choice in Calvert County.5
