Aquila Johns (b. circa ? - d. circa ?)
MSA SC 5496-050747
War of 1812 Claimant, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1828

Biography:

Aquila Johns was born in Maryland on February 12, 1845 to Richard Johns and Margaret Crabb. Johns served in the Revolutionary War. He was appointed second Lieutenant of the Ship Defense in 1776. Johns was the captain of the vessel Buckskin in Baltimore from 1777-1783.

During the War of 1812, Johns lost about twenty slaves who ran off to the British. Aquilla Johns later filed a claim with Henry Callis for the slaves that they lost during the war. Both of the men had their claim rejected because they were unable to produce any circumstantial evidence. Many owners submitted names and ages of the slaves that they lost and were able to prove the loss through depositions from family and friends. Johns and Callis did not list slaves nor did they have the depositions they needed to support their claims.

Aquila Johns died September 20, 1820 in Prince George's County, MD.
