John C. Ireland (b. circa ? - d. 1826)
MSA SC 5496-050744
War of 1812 Claimant, Calvert County, Maryland, 1828

Biography:

John Ireland married Margaret J. Bourne of Calvert County, MD. The Ireland family lived in St. Leonards, Calvert County, MD. John Ireland acquired enslaved property through his marriage to Margaret.

During the War of 1812, an enslaved man Thomas Brown, belonging to Ireland and his wife, escaped to the British who were in the Patuxent River. After the war Ireland submitted a claim for the loss of his property to the enemy. Ireland claimed that a frame house, valued at $400, was destroyed by the enemy. According to Ireland, the house was by military men under the leadership of Joshua Barney, which resulted in the British plundering the house in the town of St. Leonard's Creek. Benjamin H. Mackall, another claimant, gave a deposition that he saw the British on at the tobacco warehouse on Ireland's property. Joshua Barney countered Ireland's claim by saying that the frame house, "likely a tobacco barn,"  was on a common landing.

In the years following the war slaves continued to flee from John Ireland's St. Leonard's Creek property. In 1820, Samuel an enslaved man belonging to Ireland escaped. However, Samuel was caught and jailed in Prince George's County. George H. Lanham, sheriff for Prince George's County, put out a notice in the Daily National Intelligencer newspaper advertising the commital of Samuel to the county jail.

John Ireland died in 1826. Following his death a claim was submitted in 1828, by his widow, who wanted to be compensated for the loss of their enslaved man Thomas Brown.
