Ann Dare (b. ? - d. circa 1828)
MSA SC 5496-050695
War of 1812 Claimant, Calvert County, Maryland
Biography:
Ann B. Dare was the daughter of Dr. John Dare of Calvert County.1 Her mother was either Elizabeth Brooke, who died in 1805, or Dare's second wife, Margaret Mackall Wilkinson, whom Dare had married in 1810.2 Ann Dare had at least two siblings, Susan and Nathaniel.3
In July 1814, two of Ann Dare's slaves William Mitchel and Richard Cornelius, fled to a British vessel in the Patuxent River.4 Another slave, William Dare, who belonged to Ann's father John, also escaped to a British Vessel. Following the war many Maryland residents filed a claim to receive compensation for the loss of their property which included slaves and household goods. Ann Dare and her father both filed a claim. However, John Dare died in 1826, before his claim was completed, so Ann represented the claim.5
Ann Dare passed away around 1828, and her brother, Nathaniel, served as the
administrator of her estate. He also took over their father's claim for
the escaped slaves, with John Dare's estate receiving $280—compensation
for one slave—in 1828.5
