War of 1812 Escaped Slave, St. Mary's County, Maryland
Biography:
On Sunday, February 19, 1815, George
Loker's slave Jerry Lynch fled to the British frigate Havannah,
joining seven other slaves who had left Loker's farm earlier that day.1
Lynch escaped from James Richardson's neighboring farm, where Loker may
have hired him out.2 All seven slaves were transferred to the
Orlando
on February 27, 1815.3 Lynch and at least four of the seven
slaves arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, between 1815 and 1818. The Halifax
List stated his age as twenty-two.4
