Biography:

    Harriot Brown was born in Maryland to John Brown and his wife Agnes Hamilton. Harriot was raised at the family home Mount Calvert, in Prince George's County, Maryland. Harriot Brown married Henry Brooke January 13, 1798 in Prince Georges County. Harriot and Henry Brooke were the parents of Maria, John, Harriet, Henry, and Edward Brooke. 

    In 1814, British ships sailing up the Patuxent river on the way to Washington, stopped near Mount Calvert. During that time Ben a slave belonging to Harriot Brooke escaped to the British and never returned home. Following the war Brooke filed a claim for the loss of Ben and for her brother John Hamilton Brown who lost his enslaved woman Jenny. Dr. William Beanes who was captured by the British gave a deposition stating that he saw Ben and Jenny on board the British vessel Thetis lead by Captain Montague. Brooke and her brother John Brown appointed William Kelly of Alabama as their attorney to handle the claim.
