Biography:

    Miel Wise was born in 1758 in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. He was baptized a Catholic. Wise married Monica Jarboe on Dec 24, 1797 in St. Mary’s County. They were the parents of Mary, Ann, Catherine, Harriet, and Samuel. He married Jane Cullison April 20, 1803 in St. Mary’s County.

    During the War of 1812, four of Wise's slaves escaped from his property. One of Wise's slaves, nineteen-year-old Charlotte Handy, went off with the British and was taken to the Tangier Island Camp. She fled with her infant daughter Louisa and her husband William Handy, who belonged James Hopewell. Charlotte was pregnant during the time of her escape. While in the Tangier Island, Charlotte gave birth to a son named William Handy. Two more of Wise's slaves, forty-year-old Winney Thomas and her son Shadrick, also fled. Winney was the wife of James "Jim" Thomas, who belonged to Judge John Rousby Plater. Jim Thomas also fled from Judge Plater during this time. In 1828, Wise filed a claim for his slaves that were carried off by the British.

Miel Wise died in St. Mary's County in 1832. Wise made no mention of his slaves in his last will and testament.
