Escaped from near Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, 1849
Biography:
On July 17, 1849, Rose, "a first rate house servant," ran away from
her enslavement on Elizabeth
Darne's farm in the Rockville District. The widowed Darne placed a
runaway
advertisement in the Daily National Intelligencer, describing
Rose as approximately fifteen or sixteen years old. Darne recalled few
details of Rose's appearance, except that Rose stood about five feet tall
and had "a slight swelling under the left jaw."1
