On July 17, 1849, Rose, "a first rate house servant," ran away from her enslavement on Elizabeth Darne's farm in the Rockville District. The widowed Darne placed a runaway advertisement in the Daily National Intelligencer, describing Rose as approximately fifteen or sixteen years old. Darne recalled few details of Rose's appearance, except that Rose stood about five feet tall and had "a slight swelling under the left jaw."1
