Escaped from near Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, 1857
Biography:
In March 1856, Charles (last name currently unknown) fled his enslavement on Dr. Charles J. Maddox's farm in the Rockville District.1 On March 27th, Dr. Maddox placed a runaway advertisement in the Montgomery County Sentinel, offering a seventy-five-dollar reward for Charles' capture.2 Maddox described Charles as "about 28 years of age, dark copper color, and slightly marked with small pox." When he escaped, he wore "a dark full cloth coat, light pants, and a black slouch hat." Charles had worked on Dr. Maddox's farm along with six other slaves: Joe, age 11; George, age 23; John, age 24; Hanson, age 50; and Leah, age 53.3 It is not currently known if any of the individuals were related.
