Escaped from the Rockville District, Montgomery County, Maryland, 1830

Biography:

Nelson escaped his enslavement on John Jones' farm on January 14, 1830. On the 18th, Jones placed a runaway advertisement for the fifteen-year-old fugitive in the Daily National Intelligencer. Jones described Nelson as friendly, with a "dark complexion, thin face and long nose, [and] full eyes," and standing about 5'3" or 5'4". He also gave several details regarding Nelson's clothing, including the fact that his shoe soles were "nailed with saddler's tacks."1
