Biography:

John Maynard was born free in Anne Arundel County, MD around 1810. John purchased the freedom of his wife Maria in 1840 and soon after purchased the freedom of his step daughter Phoebe Ann Spencer and mother-in-law Phoebe Spencer. John and Maria had two sons, John Henry and Lewis. John Maynard purchased two lot's on Duke of Gloucester Street from James Iglehart on September 23, 1847, one which was his home at 163 Duke of Gloucester Street. Maynard worked as a waiter in the city of Annapolis. He attended Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church in Annapolis. John Maynard died in 1875 and left his wife executor of his estate.
