Biography:
Matthew Ward Tilghman was the son of Colonel
John Tilghman and his wife Ann Tilghman.1 When his father
died in 1866, Tilghman inherited the slaves Dan, Frederick, Stephen and
Nell (and her child, not named), along with the children John and Wesley.
He also received ownership of the farm Chesterfield on which he alread
lived, which appeared near Centreville on J.G. Stong's 1866
map of Queen Anne's County.2 Col. Tilghman had purchased
the eighteen acres from William E. Emory.3
