In 1857, after Douglass ran to freedom, he sought reconciliation with his old master, Hugh Auld.  This letter sought both information and permission to dialogue with those who had owned him in his youth. Mrs. Howard V. Hall Collection,  Box 1, folder 4, 1857/10/04, MSA SC 163.
