Biography:
George Washington Biscoe was born in Maryland to George Biscoe and his wife Araminta Thompson Carroll, the former widow of Henry James Carroll. George W. Biscoe married Hannah Sophia Oden September 28, 1812 in Prince George's County, MD. Hannah Oden Biscoe died October 8, 1813 at Bellefield, the home of her father Benjamin Oden, Sr. George W. Biscoe served as a major in the 17th regement of the Maryland militia during the War of 1812.
During the War of 1812, a mulatto man, Robert Warton, belonging to Biscoe's father George, escaped to the British. Following the war, George W. Biscoe filed a claim on behalf of his deceased father who died in 1817. Numerous Marylander's submitted claims to the Department of State to receive compensation for the loss of their slaves that were carried off or escaped to the British. Biscoe was awarded $280 for his fathers loss of Robert Warton.
On September 26, 1815, George W. Biscoe married Ann Maria Hopewell in St. Mary's County. Together George and Ann Maria had the following children, Elizabeth, Ann, Clarence, and Araminta. The Biscoe's resided in the Nottingham District of Prince George's County.
George W. Biscoe died August 3, 1859 and was buried in the cemetery at Mt. Airy plantation. In later years, the Biscoe and others were reinterred at the St. Thomas Church Cemetery in Croom, MD. Biscoe's widow Ann Maria filed a pension in 1878, but died two years later in 1880.
