Biography:

Nathaniel Magruder Waters was born about March 31, 1786 in Montgomery County, Maryland to William Waters, Jr. and Susannah Magruder. Nathaniel Waters married Achsah Dorsey (b. 1789), daughter of Harry Woodward Dorsey and Mary Maccubbin, on June 22, 1809 in Montgomery County. Nathaniel and Achsah Waters were the parents of Harry, Juliann, Achsah, Eleanor, Zachariah, and Nathaniel Waters and his family resided in the Cracklin District of Montgomery County.  In 1817, Nathaniel Waters purchased his first tract of land called, Hope Improved, from his father-in-law Harry W. Dorsey. Hope Improved was approximately two hundred acres of land when Waters purchased it. That same year Nathaniel and his brother Horace placed an ad in a Frederick County newspaper for a sale at the home of their deceased father William Waters. The sale included negroes, cattle, horses, and furniture. In 1820 Nathaniel and Horace purchased land that previously belonged to their deceased father William, from his executor Zachariah Waters. Each brother held equal shares of the land that was listed in their deceased father's will. In 1834 Harry Dorsey left a plot of land in Montgomery County to Nathaniel and his wife Achsah.

Nathaniel Waters like others of the time was a slaveholder. In 1842 three of Waters slaves, William, John, and Daniel Bowie ran away from his home with three other slaves belonging to Edwin Waters and Jane Magruder. Waters had seventeen slaves in 1850, five males and twelve females, ranging in age from one to seventy. When Waters had his slaves assessed in 1855, he had a total of 21 slaves which included six males and fifteen females. The slaves listed in Waters assessment are: Elijah, William, George, Dick, John, James, Jerry, Sarah (9), Jemima, Mary, Lucy, Sarah (8), Ann (5), Fanny, Harriet, Ann (17), Margaret, Savila, Delilah, Rachel, Maria, and Sally.

Waters wife Achsah died in 1855,  leaving him a widower. After Achsah's death, Nathaniel Waters continued farming in Montgomery County. In the 1860 U.S. Census, he is listed as the head of household with three other family members living there. Nathaniel Magruder Waters died intestate July 11, 1865 in Montgomery County.
