Biography:
At age nineteen, Charles Ringgold successfully escaped from slavery. Ringgold fled from Perrymanville, in Cecil County, Maryland to protect himself from "being whipped like a dog, and the prospect of being sold further South." (Still, 510) Ringgold reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
