Biography:
In 1859, John Hillis successfully escaped from his owner, Louisa Le Count of Dorchester County, Maryland. Before his escape, he had worked on Le Count's farm and on her schooner, the "Majestic." On a trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he decided to run, stating that he could not "consent to go back." He left his wife and children in Dorchester County, who were owned by Harriet Dean and lived three-quarters of a mile from Le Count .
