Biography:

In 1857 at the age of forty-four, John Alexander fled Kent County, Maryland with fellow slaves Sam Benton, James Henry, and Samuel Turner.  Though little has yet been recovered about his life after escape, Alexander reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
