Biography:

Harry Wise was raised in Hardford County Maryland but was relocated to West River in Anne Arundel County where he was the slave of Elliot Burwell.  On August 11, 1857, the twenty-four year old Harry was beaten and chased by his master with a gun.  Harry kept running and never stopped, ending up in Philadelphia near the end of the month.
