Biography:

Henry Saunders fled from his owner, George Spencer of Kent County, Maryland, in 1856.  Spencer was married to Margaret and together they had four children, Helen, Jervis, Charlotte, and Laura.  He is thought to have escaped with fellow slaves Abe Fineer, Sam Davis, William Henry Thompson, and Thomas Parker.  Though little has yet been recovered about his life after escape, Henry reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
