MSA SC 5496-8056
Fled from Slavery, Dorchester County, Maryland, 1857

Biography:

Nathan Collins successfully escaped from Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1857 at the age of twenty-five.  He left behind his twenty year old wife, Mary Ellen Collins, when he fled his owner, Josiah Wilson, with fellow slave Thomas Henry.  All were from New Market, including Mary Ellen; however, she was owned by Wilson's son, Abram.  Though little information has yet been recovered about his life after his escape, Collins is known to have reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected to the Underground Railroad.
