William Taylor (b. circa 1802 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-3384
Accomplice to slave flight, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1857

Biography:

On April 6, 1857, the first Judicial Circuit Court of the State of Maryland in Upper Marlboro of Prince George's County charged William Taylor with enticing and harbouring a runaway slave. At the trial on April 9, 1857 witnesses James G. Webster, Charles R. Bealle and Philip T. Chandler testified that on March 26, 1857 Taylor enticed a female slave named Susan to run away, and harboured both her and the child from their master, Philip T. Chandler. William Taylor was listed as married in his prison record, and it is believed that the two slaves he helped were his wife, Susan, and their child. The Court sentenced Taylor on April 14th, 1857 to serve five years and three months in the Maryland State Penitentiary. He was nearly sixty years old.
