Accomplice to slave flight, Baltimore City, Maryland, 1854
Biography:
On September 29, 1854 the Baltimore City Criminal Court committed Stephen Chambers, an eighteen year old free Black man born in Baltimore City in 1836, to the Maryland State Penitentiary for enticing a slave to run away. The Baltimore City Criminal Court sentenced Chambers to six years to be served out in the State Penitentiary. The Maryland State Penitenitary released Chambers on September 29, 1860. Stephen Chambers went on to marry Rachel and father Sarah, Mary, John and Stephen, Jr. He was recorded in the 1870 Baltimore City Census employed as a laborer His wife kept house, and his eldest daughter was attending school.
