George Banks (b. circa 1835 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-3377
Accomplice to slave flight, Baltimore City, Maryland, 1854

Biography:

George Banks, a nineteen year old free Black ostler who was a resident of Baltimore City, the city of his birth, was imprisoned in the Maryland Penitentiary on May 9, 1854 for enticing a slave to run away in Anne Arundel County.  He was sentenced to be imprisoned for seven years, but was released on July 24, 1857.  His early discharge was related to the fire in the north wing of the Penitentiary Building that he, John Bowen, and possibly other prisoners were blamed for setting. In 1860, he lived in the 8th Ward of Baltimore as a laborer, and in 1871 he was an oyster shucker at Hog Alley near Pratt in Baltimore City.
