Accomplice to slave fight, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, 1836

Biography:

James Brown was a free black man from Elk Ridge, Montgomery County, Maryland.  James was recorded to have been a laborer in 1836.  James was brought to trial  for helping a slave to flee from his or her master.  On April 25, 1836 James Brown's sentence received four years in prision for his involvement with the escape of the slave.  James spent his time in prison as a cook in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.  James was released on April 27, 1840 at the end of his sentence.
