Biography:
Samuel Bond lived in Prince George's County with his wife, Clarissa Sothoron, whom he had married by 1775.1 Clarissa Bond had inherited 400 acres of Calverts Manor from her grandfather, Zachariah Bond.2 In 1778, he bought 150 more acres from the tract "Calvert Manor."3 The tract was also called "Elizabeth" or "Piscattaway Manor." That year, Bond also "took the Oath of Allegiance before the Hon. Thomas Clagett."4 Bond purchased another 136 acres in 1784, this time from a tract called None Such.5
Bond owned thirty-nine slaves in 1790, twenty-eight slaves in 1800,
and thirty-five slaves in 1810.6 Two of his slaves, Amos
and James, escaped
to the British during the War of 1812.7 Clarissa passed away
sometime after 1800, and Samuel married Elizabeth Forbes, the widow of
John Forbes.8 Bond died in 1818. In his will, Bond mentioned
his nephews, John Sothoron, Zachariah Sothoron, Henry Sothoron, and James
Forbes Sothoron; his nieces, Eleanor Gardiner, Susanna Key Bond, and Clarissa
Griffin; and his grandniece, Mary Clarissa Bond Compton (nee Barnes).9
She was the daughter of one of Bond's executors, John
Barnes, who took over Bond's claim for the two escaped slaves following
Bond's death.10
