Biography:

Frisby Chamomile (also spelled Camomile or Cammerwell) was born around 1848 in Dorchester County, Maryland, but was later a slave on the farm of Samuel S. Tarbutton of Queen Anne's County. On August 22, 1863, Tarbutton manumitted him.1

On 27 September 1863, he enlisted in the 7th Regiment, Company E, United States Colored Infantry. Chamomile’s military records noted that he was 5’5” tall, with a black complexion, black eyes, and curly hair. He was detached as guard at the Birney Barracks, Baltimore, Maryland. In December 1863, he was "absent detached, recruiting service" by the order of Colonel William Birney. In January 1864, Chamomile was listed as on extra or daily duty, reporting daily to Benedict. A Camp Stanton operated in Benedict, Maryland (Charles County), a recruiting and training post.2

Chamomile’s military service records note that he was present at the Battles of John’s Island, South Carolina, on July 9, 1864 and at Deep Bottom, Virginia, on August 14, 1864. He was mustered out of the United States Colored Troops on November 16, 1866.
