John Wetherby (b. circa 1807)
MSA SC 5496-1521
Fled from slavery, Somerset County, Maryland, 1842

Biography:

While owned by Dr. Joseph Wetherley of Somerset County, ran away while he was in Baltimore. Was this a 'for hire' situation wherein the master had hired John out? Was John out on an errand alone as Wetherley implies in the notice? Does the mention of the servant's teeth, "(John Wetherby) has one or two of his front teeth knocked out" indicate a brutal living condition. The referenced ad was in its second week that indicates, at least, a brief period of freedom for John.
