Biography:

Emanuel Gough ran from Thomas R. Early's farm in the Nottingham District of Prince George's County on March 16, 1855.  Early believed the young man headed from Baltimore, where he might be received and aided by family.  Having been held in Baltimore as a slave prior to being sold and taken to Prince George's, Gough also likely had friendship and social connections in that city, including both enslaved and free blacks.  The nature of urban slavery, and that fact that free blacks outnumber enslaved blacks by a ratio of nearly 12:1.  An alternate possibility to Baltimore as destination was Montgomery County where Gough's wife lived, the enslaved property of John L. Dufief, a Darnestown attorney.
