SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES AP STATE SCHOLARS
Montgomery and Howard County students receive honors for Advanced Placement Exam
BALTIMORE (December 8, 2004)
State Schools Superintendent Dr. Nancy Grasmick announced today that two Maryland high school students received AP State Scholar Awards based on their outstanding performance on the Advanced Placement Program Examinations.

Frank Washburn of Montgomery County’s Walt Whitman High School and Aparna Balasubramanian of Howard County’s Centennial High School are among 102 students nationwide to receive this honor. Frank is now studying at Harvard University and Aparna is attending Princeton University.

This is the fourteenth annual granting of AP State Scholar Awards. One male and one female are selected from each U.S. State and the District of Columbia. The student must have scored a grade of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5) on all exams taken.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses. In June 2004, the College Board recognized Maryland for increasing AP participation, especially among low-income and minority students. From 2002 to 2003, 41 percent more minority students in Maryland took an AP exam.
