BERNARD L. ANTKOWIAK NAMED ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) Secretary James D. Fielder, Jr., today announced the appointment of Bernard L. Antkowiak as Assistant Secretary for Workforce Development, effective July 7, 2003. Antkowiak has extensive experience in all facets of workforce development.

“With his extensive experience in the workforce development arena, Bernard Antkowiak brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to Maryland’s workforce development system,” said Secretary Fielder. “Bernie is a team player and a consensus builder who will be instrumental in ensuring the participation of the other State and local partners in our workforce development initiatives.”

Antkowiak, 48, has served in numerous capacities including Assistant Director for Business Services and Program Management in the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development in Baltimore. In addition, he has worked as Executive Director of a private non-profit, as a consultant to Employ Baltimore, and as a planner with Baltimore City Public Schools.

“The appointment of Bernard Antkowiak demonstrates the commitment of our Administration to workforce development,” said Governor Ehrlich. “Workforce development is integral to economic development.”

As Assistant Secretary of Workforce Development, Antkowiak will oversee the employment services and training programs as well as the labor market information activities of DLLR.

Antkowiak is currently the Associate Executive Director of the National Emergency Medicine Association. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University, and a Master of Arts from Loyola College. Antkowiak and his wife reside in Baltimore.
