Tapping Technology

Get Out! Outdoors That Is!

One of the great wonders of summer is getting outdoors to enjoy the sun, scenery, and, even the nighttime sky as it lights up with fireflies. And of course, some of the great, classic pastimes such as golf, fishing, and even horseback riding will captivate persons of any age. But how does one enjoy these activities if he/she uses a wheelchair, or has another disability that might limit the opportunity to enjoy an activity?

For years, individuals with disabilities have struggled against discrimination and barriers in order to integrate into the mainstream of society. With the implementation of laws such as the Americans With Disabilities Act to large and small organizations and non-profits advocating for an accessible world, the barriers that once stood in the way of many with disabilities has slowly begun to crumble. And with this ever-burgeoning access to the world of technology and work, there comes new doors that lead to new opportunities.

The world of sports has often be regaled as a place for those of strong bodies and even stronger will. With a national league for nearly every sport, it is no wonder that the image that one draws of a sports player is often of someone with full mobility over all aspects of his/her body and mind. But recently, with the advertisement and airtime of events such as the Special Olympics, many people are beginning to realize that sports, much like anything else, can be adapted for someone with a disability.

From water-skiing and scuba diving to cycling and golfing, wide arrays of activities are opening doors to those with disabilities.

There are a number of activities and organizations both locally and nationally that can be accessed for those interested in learning more about outdoor activities.

Below is only a small listing of websites that can help in locating and becoming active in various accessible sports:
