The editorial board of Disability World, (http://www.disabilityworld.org) the international webzine of news and views, has issued a Call for Submissions on "Disability & Political Violence." Researchers, writers and organizations around the world are invited to contribute articles, annotated bibliographies, photo-essays and audio-video presentations examining the relationship between disability and political violence. The deadline is December 31, 2002.
We are looking for material documenting how political violence leaves impairment and trauma in its wake. While this is a problem of global proportions, in our estimation the international disability community has yet to acknowledge the relationship of political violence to disability. We define "political violence" broadly as violent conflict motivated by national, religious, ethnic, cultural, racial and other differences, often rooted in disputes over power within a historical context.
Please submit material to editor@disabilityworld.org in the following formats: written articles as MS Word (.doc) or plain text (.txt) documents; graphics in JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif), preferably at 300 dpi resolution; and audio-video files as Real Media or Quicktime files.
New Issue of Disability World Critiques Progress in Access, Employment, Governance, Media & Institutions
In the latest issue of Disability World, many reporters took a close look at developments in key sectors affecting the status and human rights of people with disabilities and found the pace of progress too slow.
As examples: a report from Chile critiques the accessibility of the voting and election process; articles from Norway examine ways to make headway in the stagnant employment situation; a South African lawyer praises the intent but not the glacial rate of implementation of rights among the distinct disabled populations; a European project attacks large institutions at their roots in eight Eastern European countries; a U.S. reporter interviews British advocates about how they are challenging the recent spate of media reports supporting euthanasia and suicide among disabled individuals; a Dutch traveler is not happy with the level of accessibility in European theme and vacation parks; a Costa Rican journalist reflects on the "lights and shadows" being cast on disability issues by prominent politicians; a disabled Fullbright scholar takes an inside look at sheltered workshops in the Philippines; and two reports examine institutional and cultural resistance to reducing discrimination against women and girls with disabilities.
