Submission Deadline: 10/15/02
A call for proposals (500 words) for essays for an anthology to be edited by Mady Schutzman and Jan Cohen-Cruz focusing on selected issues/paradigms that inform Theatre of the Oppressed and contextualize them within a broader arena of cultural scholarship. The editors are not seeking essays that document various manifestations of Theatre of the Oppressed per se. Chapters with authors already committed focus on storytelling, trickster, witnessing, art and the everyday, and activism. Especially welcome are abstracts that address mimesis, critical pedagogy, the carnivalesque, play theory, and feminism. (Other categories are also invited.) The anthology will also include five review essays that critically engage the primary themes of each of Boal's five books (actor training for Games, therapy for Rainbow of Desire, and the relationship between personal history and public legacy for Hamlet and the Baker's Son). Writers are sought to review the first half of Theatre of the Oppressed, examining the philosophical roots of the system. (Note An essay on Legislative Theatre has already been commissioned.)
Please contact Mady Schutzman at mschutzm@calarts.edu and Jan Cohen-Cruz at jgc1@nyu.edu for further details prior to submission. Proposals due by October 15, 2002.
