Delegate Sheila Hixson gets Roasted

Wednesday, October 4th at 7 p.m. at the Indian Springs Country Club we will be Roasting State Delegate Sheila Hixson. This is a fund-raiser to benefit Jubilee Association of Maryland. Jubilee provides community residential services for adults who have developmental disabilities. Del. Hixson has been a strong supporter of Jubilee and other organizations, which support people who have disabilities. Doing the Roasting will be Master of Ceremonies Del. Mark Shriver, Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan, State Delegates Peter Franchot, John Hurson and Pete Rawlings, Spreaker of the House of Delegates Cas Taylor, State Senator Ida Ruben, and U.S. Congressman Al Wynn. Also in attendance will be State Comprtoller and former Governor William Donald Schaefer.

Chris Biddle Memorial Bike-A-Thon

Progress in Motion
(Bike/Walk-a-thon)

This event, sponsored by the Holly Foundation, is held on the grounds of the Holly Center for family safety. Participants obtain pledges and turn them in on the day of the Bike-A-Thon. T-shirts will be given to any participant raising $20 or more. Cyclists of all ages may ride bicycles, tri-cycles or even stationary bicycles bikes at their own pace and for any distance. Walkers are encouraged to tour the one mile scenic route on the inner campus of the Holly Center. Food and beverages are provided FREE. Community groups, support groups or organizations serving individuals with disabilities are permitted to participate to generate funds for their own organization.

Maryland ADA Update

ADA Update: Beyond 2000

Join us for this excellent program sponsored by the Maryland Coalition for ADA Education, the Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council, and the ADA Information Center for the Mid-Atlantic Region. Funding is provided in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

This program is highly recommended for anyone involved or interested in the latest ADA developments.

Speakers will include representatives from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as the Equal Rights Center, the Maryland Alternative Resolution Commission, and the Maryland Disability
Law Center.

Special guest speaker: Andy Levy, well known local disability rights advocate and attorney with the firm Brown, Goldstein, & Levy.

Keynote speaker: Hugh Gallagher, the noted disability rights activist, historian, and author of numerous articles and books, including "By Trust Betrayed: Patients, Physicians and the License to Kill in the Third Reich" and "FDR's Splendid Deception".

Topics to be covered include:

* challenges to the constitutionality of Title II
* how the change in the definition of disability is affecting court decisions
* alternative dispute resolution as a means of resolving ADA complaints
* latest information on employment, state and local government, and public accommodations, as well as fair housing issues

How to Get Technology Into Your Child's IEP

This three hour workshop reviews laws and regulations about assistive technology devices and services and offers practical guidance for incorporating assistive technology into your child's IEP.
