Seniors Actively Pursue Needed Information - And Have Fun Doing It!
If you saw 1200 senior citizens enjoying live music, food, and door prizes you might think they were spending their children's' inheritance on one heck of a party! But if it's May in Hagerstown, then everyone is attending the free Senior's Fair coordinated by the Washington County Commission on Aging. Seniors gather each year for free health screenings and to collect samples and literature from numerous companies and public agencies which cater to the needs of seniors--or "keenagers" as they are referred to here.
For a number of years now there have been demonstrations of assistive technologies, first by MDTAP and later by a collaboration of WMTAP with the locally-based non-profit organization, The Corporation for Assistive Technology. Information was provided on the ramping project, the senior demonstration site and the high tech lab at the Western Maryland Hospital Center. Literature was distributed to help seniors maintain their independence despite failing vision, hearing or mobility difficulties. It was obvious from the lively mood of the crowd that these seniors are not going to take aging sitting down!
