Assessment Training Institute

Attention Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Professionals, Special Education Teachers, and School Assessments Teams - and parents who want to be in the know! This is for you, and CEUs, too!

LATAN, in conjunction with Southeastern Louisiana University, is sponsoring a 3-day Assistive Technology Assessment Training Institute, July 11-13, 2000.

The theme of the institute is "Creating Effective Assessment Teams" using the SETT (Student, Environments, Tasks, and Tools) approach to assessment developed by Joy Zabala, who will be the keynote speaker.

The purpose of the institute is to increase the skills of those doing assistive technology assessments by focusing on the team approach. The SETT framework is a problem-identification-and-solving tool that supports a collaborative process by students, parents, and multi-disciplinary professionals, whereby assessments are conducted in consumer environments; take into consideration the consumer's needs, desires, interests, and abilities; and integrate technology into the assessment methodology.

There will be 4 training tracks: Computer Access; Augmentative Communication; Worksite and Home Accommodations; and Seating, Positioning, and Mobility. In addition, there will be mentoring clinics using case studies and presentations on topics such as funding, innovative interventions, unusual solutions, and lesson-plan activities.

The deadline for registration is June 27. The fee is $175 for all 3 days or $75 per day for 1 or 2 days. A continental breakfast and lunch for each day is included. For more information and a registration form, call Johniece Whitehead at 1-800-349-2774 or LATAN at 1-800-270-6185 (in Baton Rouge: 925-9500).
