The Maryland Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities Conference


The Maryland Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, Maryland Works, The Maryland Business Leadership Network, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration, Maryland Department of Human Resources, BGE and McCormick, inc. present Economic Realities: People with Disabilities =Profit and Productivity on May 19 at the Holiday Inn-Timonium.

Speakers include Jonathan Young from the White House, Secretary John O'Connor from the Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation, with sessions on self-employment, legal and legislative update and supported employment. The Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is pleased to announce seven, one week ATACP sessions for the summer of 2000. The ATACP is more convenient than ever! The ATACP, now in its fourth year, offers 52 hours of interactive on-line instruction, 40 hours of live instruction, and an 8 hour certificate project. This configuration meets the 100 hour requirement for a Certificate in Assistive Technology Applications from CSUN's College of Extended Learning and the Center on Disabilities.
This unique and dynamic in-service training program is designed for individuals who seek to enhance their professional development and skill level by earning a Certificate in Assistive Technology Applications. The ATACP training experience includes electronic and live information sharing through readings, lectures, demonstrations, discussions, observations, and presentations on applications of assistive technology. Nationally recognized speakers and consultants share information across a wide range of assistive technology (AT) topics.
** Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed until participants have been interviewed by phone or email by an ATACP Trainer and payment in full is received. Please do not make hotel or travel arrangements until you have been officially accepted into the program. Participants should register as early as possible and are considered on a first come, first served basis. Past ATACP sessions filled months in advance, therefore, early registration is strongly encouraged.

RESNA Announces Credentialing Examination in Assistive Technology

* Assistive Technology Practitioner Certificate -- For service providers primarily involved in analysis of a consumer's needs and training in use of a particular device.
* Assistive Technology Supplier Certificate -- For service providers involved in the sale and service of commercially available devices.

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible to register for the Assistive Technology Practitioner or the Assistive Technology Supplier credential if you can demonstrate proof of attaining at least one of the following:
a. Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in a Rehabilitation Science1 and .25 full time equivalent in Assistive Technology direct consumer related services2 for a minimum of 2 years.

b. Associate Degree in a Rehabilitation Science1 plus .50 full time equivalent in Assistive Technology direct consumer related services for a minimum of 2 years.

c. Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in a non-Rehabilitation Science1 plus .50 full time equivalent in Assistive Technology direct consumer related services for a minimum of 4 years.

d. Associate Degree in non-Rehabilitation Science plus 1 full time equivalent in Assistive Technology direct consumer related services for a minimum of 4 years.

e. High School Degree plus 1 full time equivalent in Assistive Technology direct consumer related services for a minimum of 4 years.

For Assistive Technology Supplier candidates only:

f. High School degree plus 1 full time equivalent in AT direct consumer related services for a minimum of 2 years.

1 For the purposes of this program, Rehabilitation Science degree is defined as one of the following: Audiology, Medicine, Nursing, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Vocational Rehabilitation Evaluator, Rehabilitation Engineering3, Rehabilitation Technology4, Prosthetics & Orthotics.

(Note: 1 full-time equivalent (FTE) = a 40 hour work week
.50 full-time equivalent (FTE) = a 20 hour work week
.25 full-time equivalent (FTE) = a 10 hour work week)

2 Direct consumer-related services are those assistive technology services which are provided in person to the consumer and others related to or working with the consumer. They may include assessment and evaluation services, implementation and training services an/or other direct services. They do not include services such as only providing
information over the telephone, relay services, etc. that do not involve participatory, hands-on work with the consumer.

3 Rehabilitation Engineering- This is defined to include any Engineering Bachelor's or graduate degree in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, rehabilitation engineering, ergonomics or related curricula in which the focus is application of engineering disciplines and methods to human function and disability.
4 Rehabilitation Technology- This is defined as an Associate's degree curriculum for technicians which focuses on application of technologies to the needs of people with disabilities.

III. Eligibility requirements will be in effect until the year 2001. Beyond the year 2001, these requirements will change, as outlined below.

Eligibility Requirements for Year 2001 ATP and ATS Candidates
a. Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in a Rehabilitation Science and .50 FTE in AT direct consumer-related services for a minimum of 2 years or .25 FTE for 3 years.
b. Associate's Degree in a Rehabilitation Science and 1 FTE in AT direct consumer-related services for a minimum of 2 years or .5 FTE for 3 years.
c. Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in a non-Rehabilitation Science and .5 FTE in AT direct consumer-related services for a minimum of 4 years.
For Assistive Technology Supplier candidates only:
d. High School degree and 1 FTE in AT direct consumer-related services for a minimum of 2 years, and documentation demonstrating participation in 30 contact hours of education in AT, with a maximum of 50% delivered by manufacturers.
