Smithsonian Hosts Conversation with Inventor Ray Kurzweil
Portrait of Invention: Ray Kurzweil
Friday, April 14
6:30 p.m.
National Museum of American History
Carmichael Auditorium
The Smithsonian's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation presents a conversation with inventor, author and artificial intelligence expert Ray Kurzweil. Kurzweil was the principal developer of numerous inventions including the first large vocabulary speech recognition dictation system, the first computer music keyboard capable of accurately reproducing the sounds of the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind.
He has received numerous awards for his achievements in technology from institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, and the White House. In his recently published book The Age of Spiritual Machines, Kurzweil predicts that computers will outpace the human brain in computational power by 2020 and apparently conscious machines will become commonplace. Marc Pachter, Counselor to the (Smithsonian) Secretary, will interview this intriguing inventor and visionary. Free and open to the public, but space is limited. Call (202) 357-1593 to make a reservation.
The Smithsonian's Lemelson Center at the National Museum of American History is dedicated to exploring invention in history and encouraging inventive creativity in young people. The center was established in 1995 with a gift from the Lemelson Foundation, a private philanthropic organization founded by inventor Jerome Lemelson.

The Second Annual Lemelson Assistive Technology Development Center Forum
April 14, 2000
Lemelson Assistive Technology
Development Center
Hampshire College - LM
Amherst, MA
8:30 AM-4:30 PM
The Forum will bring together a diverse group of designers, industry experts, people with disabilities, college students, administrators and faculty to contribute their perspectives and ideas on the aesthetics and cosmetics of assistive technology.
Traditionally, assistive technology design has emphasized the importance of function and practicality over form and aesthetics. But adaptive equipment, much like clothing or even cars, contributes to a user's personal style. The equipment's aesthetics can subtly but powerfully affect how a user perceives him/herself, relates to others, and likewise how people relate to the user.
The issue of good assistive technology design aesthetics is only beginning to emerge in the field. The aging Baby Boomers and the increasing number of people surviving accidents and illness is heightening our awareness of our country's adaptive equipment needs.
How does the look of adaptive equipment influence a person's self perceptions ?
What impact does a person's adaptive equipment have on others' perceptions of him or her?
How can we, as designers, equipment users, and educators promote the importance of good assistive technology design aesthetics?
These and other issues important to both assistive technology and universal design will be discussed in an atmosphere of sharing, creative thinking and learning.
The Day:
*Our keynote speaker will present on the importance of and considerations necessary for good design aesthetics
*Expanded presentations of innovative student project designs
*Networking with others active within the broad fields of assistive technology and universal design
*Small group workshop sessions centered around creative AT design and specific aesthetics issues important to forum participants
Registration, participation and meals at the forum are FREE, however space is limited. They are still accepting registration for a few spots in April.
