Maryland Technology Showcase '99

MD TAP was pleased to be a part of the 1999 Maryland Technology Showcase once again. The success of the event is evidenced by the return of the same vendors, year after year. The Showcase has grown and evolved each year and attracts people from all backgrounds. However, this is not an event to be considered attractive for the average consumer. It is definitely more commercially oriented. If you love technology, communication & education, then this is the place for you! Included in this article are photos taken of the showcase, along with excerpts from the State’s website on the Showcase. Website addresses are given below. Hope to see you next year!

Governor's Welcome

The Mid- Atlantic region's largest technology event of its kind.

Parris N. Glendening,
Governor of Maryland

Welcome to the 1999 Maryland Technology Showcase! This is an opportunity for Marylanders to see how technology advancements are affecting our lives -- professionally and personally.

As one of the most significant education and digital age technology events in the mid-Atlantic region, the Showcase will demonstrate how the State is addressing through technology the challenges that our communities face today and into the 21st century. This event, as the four preceding Showcases, will help communicate and demonstrate the latest technological advances and show how they will impact Maryland's students and teachers and business decision makers. With more than 300 exhibitors, the attendance is expected to exceed 12,000 people over the two-day period.

As we enter the new millennium, Maryland is poised to become the nation's technology hub. With our State's abundance of high-wage workers, a modern and efficient distribution network and several technology centers already in place, the future of technology is right here, right now. According to Maryland Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation statistics, more than 140,000 high-tech jobs exist in Maryland today. The number of high-tech jobs is growing at the phenomenal rate of almost 5.6 percent a year, nearly four times the rate of the entire private sector.

Maryland is home to some of the world's leading academic institutions and the nation's most technology advanced school system providing an unprecedented opportunity for students, citizens and professionals alike to receive the education needed to excel in the 21st century workplace. With support from the industry's leading technology companies, the 1999 Showcase presents the latest from the ever-changing and dynamic world of technology.

The fifth annual Maryland Technology Showcase will feature outstanding demonstrations of the latest technologies on the exhibit floor, as well as conferences, seminars, and workshops including discussions on accounting, e-commerce, education, information security, medical technology, networking solutions and Y2K. This is an opportunity for Marylanders and visitors from our neighboring states to obtain information through hands-on demonstrations and educational seminars.

As you walk the Showcase exhibit floor, you will see why the Maryland is considered one of the nation's most-advanced states in the field of technology. You will see the largest selection of hardware, software and networking solutions available.

State and local agencies now provide Maryland citizens access to services in new and exciting ways. These agencies will demonstrate their customer-friendly and technology advanced services. This informative web site will provide insight into many of the exhibits, educational seminars and Learning Center presentations. We know you will enjoy yourself at Maryland's most important technology event ever. This is truly the technology event for everyone.

Parris N. Glendening,

Governor

IT in Maryland

Many Maryland state agencies and organizations have made a priority of the integration and daily use of Information Technology. Here, a virtual tour of those who have taken the lead:

The Maryland Judiciary: Judicial Information Systems

Judicial Information Systems (JIS) is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining court applications throughout Maryland. These courts include the Maryland District Court, MD Court Automated Indexing System, Uniform Court System, and the Circuit Courts of Baltimore City, Anne Arundel and Carroll Counties.

Maryland District Court has jurisdiction over criminal, motor vehicle, and civil areas. The exclusive jurisdiction of the District Court generally includes all landlord tenant cases, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanor criminal cases and civil cases involving amounts not exceeding $25,000.00.

Maryland Circuit Court is the highest common law and equity court of record exercising original jurisdiction within the State. Each court has full common law and equity powers and jurisdiction in all civil and criminal cases within its county, along with all of the additional powers and jurisdiction conferred by the Constitution and the law, except when jurisdiction has been limited or conferred upon another tribunal by law.

The Automated Indexing System allows access to land, plat and miscellaneous index records for all participating circuit courts. A new enhancement to this system is the Electronic Land Records Online Imagery (ELROI). ELROI provides the ability to have an imaged copy of the land records instrument faxed back to your location.

The Uniform Court System (UCS) Case Management System is a court management application being used by Maryland’s Circuit Courts. Its civil segment is currently deployed in 20 counties. Deployment of this systems criminal segment has begun and will be made available to the dial-up community in the future.

This system saves time and money by providing online access to the most-often-requested information. Currently JIS permits access to a dial-up user community of over 2,000 subscribers. In order to obtain access please contact JIS by telephone at 410-260-1031 or 1051, email your request, visit our web site at www.courts.state.md.us, or make written request to Judicial Information Systems, Department of Security, 2661 Riva Road, Bldg. 900, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. To establish an account with JIS there is a registration fee of $50.00 and a per minute charge of .50 cents. ELROI costs an additional .25 cents per page faxed.
