SIGN-A-THON 1999

Mark your calendars!!

The next ACT Sign-a-thon will be held on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1999. The exciting event will take place from 12:30 until 5:00 p.m. in the center court of the Owings Mills Mall, off Interstate 795 (exit 19 from the Baltimore Beltway).

Plans are underway to have an exciting schedule of performers and speakers on the main stage for your entertainment and education. Presentations in sign language will be voice-interpreted and spoken presentations will be sign-interpreted. There will be ongoing exhibits throughout the afternoon for which interpreters will be provided.

The entertainment schedule includes groups of children and adults signing songs. The children will be from Bet Yeladim Preschool in Columbia and Chizuk Amuno Early Childhood Education Center in Pikesville. Adult signing choirs will also perform. Several ASL instructors from local colleges and universities will teach basic signs to anyone interested.

A variety of booths will have representatives providing information on agencies and organizations serving our local Deafblind population. This year, for the first time, a program book will be provided to all participants in the Sign-a-thon. This book will include the schedule for the events on stage as well as a listing of agencies and organizations serving Deafblind people. Ads are now being sold for this program book. Anyone interested in purchasing an ad should contact Peggy Johnson at 410-747-9118 TTY.

Participation in the Sign-a-thon requires obtaining a sponsor sheet in advance and collecting pledges from friends, family, co-workers, and anyone interested. These sponsors agree to pay a set amount of money (for example - $1, $5, $20) for an individual's participation in the event. Particpation involves watching events on the stage; travelling among the booths and interacting with the agency representatives who will be deaf, hearing and deafblind; and signing with Deaf and Deafblind participants. For skilled signers, this becomes a fun social event; for students who are new signers, participation requires courage to overcome fears about communication.

ACT expects an excellent turnout for this Sign-a-thon, including students from the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) - Catonsville, Towson University, Deaf and Deafbl.ind people from around the Baltimore and Washington areas, and other interested people. Please contact ACT at 410-381-3377 v/tty if you would like more information about participating in any way.
